Use smartphone to travel on metro’s Airport line soon

By early next year, commuters using Delhi Metro's Airport Express Line would be able to use their smartphones instead of smart cards or tokens to travel.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is introducing a new system at the Airport Express Line, which would help commuters pay for their journey through QR codes generated on their smartphones.

DMRC is going to modify automatic fare collection (AFC) gates at all the stations of the Airport Express Line to make them QR code enabled. "To provide cashless services to its commuters, DMRC will integrate the code entry through AFC gates on Airport Express Line by early next year. At present smart cards and tokens are used for travelling in this line," said a spokesperson for the corporation.

"The trials are in process for system integration," the spokesperson added.

DMRC said that passengers would be able to use Bharat QR code to make payments while using the airport line. The Bharat QR Code was launched by the central government to promote cashless transactions. The code works with all major banks in the country. It is a form of a bar code that uses one's bank information like merchant name & account number to make payments, the spokesperson said.

To use the code to pay for the journey, passengers would first need to download the Bharat QR code application on their smartphones. The passengers can then link their bank account with the application and generate a QR code.

DMRC has already started a pilot project known as 'Dream Gates' at two entry points at Lal Quila metro station and two exit points at Jama Masjid metro station, through which the commuters can enter and then exit using QR codes of e-wallets on their mobile phones.
