Overuse of IT is spoiling young minds: Professor CNR Rao

A prominent face for science in India and the world, 84 year old Prof CNR Rao doesn't believe in over utilization of technology. Having his presence across the globe may seem impossible without the use of a mobile phone or even a computer. But the veteran scientist and Bharat Ratna doesn't own either of them. "I don't miss emaild because they are diligently passed on by my secretary and that's how I am able to keep in touch with people across the globe," he said.

The scientist believes that over use of IT is affecting the minds of the youth. "Nowadays, nobody is able to answer crucial questions about their research without pulling out their laptops or checking the same on their phones. Even though I don't use technology on a day to day to basis, my research has always included the most cutting edge technology which makes its use more than enough for me," he added.

But Prof Rao's talk centered around the rapid advancement of nanotechnology across the globe. Keeping him excited even at this age, is the multitude of applications nanotechnology has across fields today. "The coverage of Nanotechnology is increasing so much that it is becoming difficult to keep up with the activities surrounding it across the world," Prof Rao said.

While the technology is already proving efficient in Nano medicine and artificial skin creation, it is yet to make a major impact in the Nano electronics area which is something we need to deliberate further over," he added.

Prof Rao, on Thursday raised the curtain for the ninth edition of the Bengaluru India Nano event which is an international Nanoscience and Nanotechnology conclave to harness the innovative use of the technology to bring forth its change making applications.

Scheduled to be held on December 7, 8 and 9 at the Lalit Ashok; the event will not only look at various speakers from across the globe talking about the advancement of the technology, but will also increase the excitement of young minds through its special program - Nano for the Young which will find hundreds of students listening to inspiring talks from researchers across the field including Prof Rao.

The conference would address the latest trends in Nanotechnology focusing on Nanosensors, Nano in Energy Sector, Nano Manufacturing and Scalability and Nano-Medicine. With 30 speakers spread across 13 odd sessions, the conference will see participation of over 500 delegates from industry, academia and research as well as representation from multiple countries including USA, Japan, UK and Korea.
