Android Nougat now runs on 13.5% devices globally, after 2% increase

Google has released the August distribution numbers for its Android operating system. As we’re closing in on the official release of Android O, the latest Android Nougat is still slowly making its presence felt on devices. As per the latest chart, Android Nougat has gained a two percent increase, and is now running on 13.5 percent devices globally. Android Marshmallow still holds the lead with distribution of 32.3 percent devices.

Android Nougat’s total presence comes from its two versions, 7.0 and 7.1. Out of the 13.5 percent devices, Android 7.0 Nougat runs on 12.3 percent devices, while Android 7.1 Nougat runs on 1.2 percent. Android 6.0 Marshmallow with just one version gained a very small 0.5 percent increase which brought its total to 32.3 percent. It is a known trait for Android’s OS to take at least a year to have a visible presence on devices. Smartphones in the entry-level are only now launching with Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box, which is likely to help increase the adoption numbers.

As for the older Android OS, the numbers are decreasing. Compared to last month’s distribution chart, Android Lollipop has a slight drop from 30.1 to 29.2. A decrease has also occurred on Android KitKat, which now runs on 16 percent devices, down from the previous 17.1 percent. The soon to disappear OS would be Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread as both run on 0.7 percent devices. Also, Google will not include Android versions with less than 0.1 percent distribution. Google is now prepping for the Android O release. It has already shut the Android Nougat Beta program, and released the final Developer Preview for Android O. This last stage is for developers to finish updating their apps that can comply with the Android O system and publish on the Play Store.
